How many business people were on stage at Figma Config this year? Almost all of this year’s speakers work for Figma. That should tell you something about the design industry’s interest in business.

Last year Airbnb’s Brian Chesky was the keynote speaker. It was by far the most watched and shared Figma video ever. This year we got people demoing how to use AI to create “products” using Material Design. Literally not one word about business, or even research for that matter.

The design industry is lost in its own soup because designers want to be in tech. They don’t want to be in business. Apple, Tesla, Google and Airbnb are design led businesses. But that’s four companies out of millions. This watershed purging of our industry is happening and no one is talking about why design has become largely irrelevant to business.
